Your Building May Be Telling You Something!

Take a look around.      What is your building telling you?
Use your eyes, nose and ears.             They can tell you a lot.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL?   Is it cold?   warm?    damp?   uncomfortable?

Read through the following suggested areas, but don't limit yourself to those listed here.

Follow Your Nose

Things to sniff for: musty,  sour, or chemical odors.

When are they strongest?

When the air conditioning is on?
When it's raining outside?
In the morning?
On Mondays?
In the fall or winter?

Where are they strongest?

Closests?
2nd story?
Basement?
Under cabinets?

Listen to Your Building

What do you hear?

When the air conditioning comes on do you know it?
Is the air flow so noisy you have to raise your voice when talking on the phone?
Is the air whistling through the front door or around your office door?
Are there popping or thumping sounds coming from the ceiling when the A/C starts up or shuts off?

Look around you.  Some indicators of high humidity (moisture):

Ceiling-

  • Rusted t-bar (ceiling track) - Rust equals moisture.
  • Bowed ceiling tiles -  Are the ceiling tiles sagging?
  • Discolored tiles -  Are there water stains?
  • Air conditioning supply grilles -  Are they rusted?  Do they appear damp?

Walls-

  • Is the wallpaper discolored?
  • Is the wallpaper coming loose?
  • If the wall is painted, is the paint peeling?

These are just a few things to look for.  It's also important to note that in addition to moisture issues, a visual inspection may uncover other problems.  For example, dust and dirt build up on the air conditioner supply grilles can indicate a lack of proper filtration.

How Does It Feel?

Is it a comfortable environment?
Is the temperature consistent or does it vary depending on the time of day or weather conditions?

Is it damp?  Does it feel cold and damp even on hot days?

Buildings exist to provide a safe, healthy and comfortable environment for people!
